Join Red Sox Pitcher Jon Lester and the Jimmy Fund in the Rally Against CancerSM

February 25, 2009

When the Red Sox return to Fenway Park on April 6 for the home opener, members of Red Sox Nation are invited to join in the fourth annual Rally Against CancerSM and help the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute shut out cancer.

Rally Against Cancer encourages Red Sox fans to partner with their companies and schools as well as their coworkers, classmates and friends to contribute at least $5 each to the Jimmy Fund in exchange for the opportunity to wear Red Sox clothing to work or school on April 6. The top fundraising company and school may be eligible for a visit from Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, honorary chair of the Rally Against Cancer.

"Not everyone can be at Fenway Park for the home opener," says Lester, "but this is a great alternative for fans to be part of the excitement and to show support for my two favorite home town teams, the Red Sox and the Jimmy Fund."

The Rally Against Cancer is a great way to build office and school spirit. Each team must designate a coach, who will help build the roster and track the team's fundraising total. The final totals will be calculated at 11 p.m. on April 6. Teams must be within a two-hour drive of Boston to win the Lester visit. Full rules are available on www.rallyagainstcancer.org.

"As a cancer survivor, I know first-hand how life-changing cancer can be for patients and their families and the important work Dana-Farber is doing to further cancer care and research," adds Lester. "Rally Against Cancer is an easy and fun way for everyone to help the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber give hope to the people who are fighting this disease."

Founded in 1948, the Jimmy Fund is an official charity of the Boston Red Sox. It supports the fight against cancer at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, which is a leading cancer research and care center for adults and children.
