BURGER KING® restaurants celebrate ten years supporting the Jimmy Fund, bringing total given to $8.5 million

October 11, 2009

From July 27 through September 7, more than 500 BURGER KING® restaurants in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont took part in the 10th annual A Chance for Kids® campaign. By raising $839,146 this year, company and franchise-owned BURGER KING® restaurants have now contributed more than $8.5 million toward pediatric cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Jimmy Fund Clinic since this program's inception in 2000.

Burger King store #2553, located at 150 Everett Avenue in Chelsea, Mass., was the top fundraising restaurant: it gave $17,143 to the Jimmy Fund. First prize included a 6 day-5 night stay at the Sheraton Nassau Bahamas courtesy of TNT vacations, plus $500 to be divided equally amongst restaurant crew members, eight tickets to a Boston Red Sox game and 12 free admissions to Six Flags® New England.

The HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm, contributed an additional $76,286 to this year's fundraising efforts.

"It is inspiring to see how this program has helped to improve the lives of young people being treated for cancer," said Jim Joy, division vice president, Northeast, Burger King Corp. "The success of this year's fundraising has exceeded our expectations and is a testament to the hard work of the entire BURGER KING® family and the generosity of our loyal restaurant guests."

In return for a $1 contribution to the Jimmy Fund, BURGER KING® guests received a scratch card guaranteed to be a winner, with prizes ranging from a vacation to Aruba and airline tickets to theme park admissions and BURGER KING® menu items.

"We are very thankful for another successful A Chance for Kids® campaign. The compassion and support of companies like Burger King Corp., their franchisees and guests, means we are able to move forward with our mission to understand, treat, and cure cancer," said Mike Andrews, chairman of the Jimmy Fund.

The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against cancer at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for children and adults with cancer around the world. Since 1948, the generosity of millions of people has helped the Jimmy Fund save countless lives by furthering cancer research and care. Unrestricted support from the Jimmy Fund is an integral part of Mission Possible: The Dana-Farber Campaign to Conquer Cancer, a $1 billion capital campaign to accelerate cancer research, speed development of life-saving therapies, and expand the Institute's signature patient- and family-centered care.
