A Premiere Cause/ The Zach Carson Fund

Zachary Carson

The Zachary Carson Brain Tumor Fund ("Zach's Fund") at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute was created in 2005 after Zachary Carson was diagnosed at the age of 17 with diffuse pontine glioma, an inoperable, malignant brain tumor. Diffuse pontine gliomas are the deadliest of all pediatric cancers and are extremely rare – only 100 to 200 children are affected in the U.S. each year and the survival rate is less than two percent. For family and friends, the difficulty of accepting Zach's diagnosis was exacerbated by learning that despite the deadliness of diffuse pontine gliomas, little funding is available to find a cure.

Zach's family is determined to change these odds and has established Zach's Fund for the sole purpose of supporting innovative research to find a cure for diffuse pontine gliomas. Zach's Fund directly supports research led by Mark Kieran, MD, PhD, director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at Dana-Farber. To date, Zach's Fund has raised more than $900,000, much of which is already in use by Kieran's team.

Zach lost his valiant battle with cancer in September 2007, but his fund continues to honor his life and the lives of all the children taken by this deadly disease.

In addition to your gifts, The Zachary Carson Brain Tumor Fund is supported by the event "A Premiere Cause."
