Mass Dash
Saturday, July 16 – Sunday, July 17, 2011
The second annual Mass Dash is a 200-mile, non-stop relay from the Berkshires to Boston to raise money for the Jimmy Fund.
Starting on July 16, 2011, teams of six to twelve runners begin at the base of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts, and race to Boston Harbor.
This relay was established in memory of Neal Webber, a Longmeadow resident who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004. Webber, who was treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, fought a hard battle, but succumbed to the disease in 2008. He was an avid runner and marathoner and the inspiration for the Mass Dash.
The 36-leg scenic course begins at the Mount Greylock State Reservation in Lanesboro and finishes at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. UMass-Amherst serves as the halfway point of the course and runners cross the Winsor Dam at the Quabbin Reservoir in the middle of the night. A post-race party is held on the lawn at UMass-Boston overlooking Boston Harbor.
