Background
Haymakers for Hope is an organization that was co-founded in the fall of 2009, when Julie Anne Kelly and Andrew Myerson embarked on a grueling training process to compete in the New York City Golden Gloves.
Julie was the defending champion in the women's 132-pound division and looking to defend her title, while Andrew was competing for his first. Julie and Andrew decided that the physical, mental, and emotional test of competing against the country's best amateur boxers was not enough, they also wanted to raise money for cancer research, making the tournament an opportunity to literally fight for a cure.
Cancer was not an anonymous, vague disease to either of them. Julie was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma shortly after college and 2012 marks her ninth year being cancer-free. By the time Andrew was in college, he’d already lost one high school friend to the disease. Natives of the Boston area, they approached Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund with idea of creating a website for donations with all proceeds supporting cancer research and patient care. Officials at Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund were extremely excited about the idea and accepted Julie and Andrew’s proposal. By the end of the tournament, Julie had successfully defended her crown and the pair raised nearly five thousand dollars.
In 2011, Haymakers for Hope took its next big step—a competitive boxing event paired with a gala and auction at the Castle at The Park Plaza Hotel in Boston. Attendance reached the 1,100 mark and the event successfully raised more than $140,000 for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund.
Haymakers for Hope looks forward to sponsoring similar events in the future, big and small, all to help conquer cancer.
