Evening with Champions history

Every year, An Evening with Champions invites world-class ice skaters to express their artistry and athletic ability before an audience of all ages. Over the past 39 years, skaters such Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, Michelle Kwan, Ilia Kulik, Ekaterina Gordeeva, Oksana Baiul, Nancy Kerrigan and countless others have graced the Harvard ice with their talent. In the last few shows, skaters such as Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, Matt Savoie, Alissa Czisny, Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker, and Kimmie Meissner have donated their time and talent to the show.

Paul Wylie, the 1992 Olympic silver medalist and class of 1990 Harvard graduate, has hosted the show, which that year featured national medal winners Matt Savoie, Scott Smitt and Dan Hollander. Pairs skaters taking the ice for An Evening with Champions have included 1964 and `68 Olympic gold medalists Ludmilla and Oleg Protopopov, and Jessica Rose Paetsch and Drew Meekins. National synchronized skating champions the Haydenettes of Massachusetts and the international Theatre on Ice champions Act I of Boston have also performed.

An Evening with Champions was founded in 1970 by former US champion John Misha Petkevich. Since then it has been run entirely by Harvard University students, raising more than $2.4 million for the Jimmy Fund. Pediatric cancer patients from the Jimmy Fund Clinic have enjoyed the opportunity to skate with the performers during the event's weekend run.
