Congratulations to Jimmy Fund
Co-Captain Tim Wakefield – always
a winner
Tim Wakefield gives an interview during the 2011 WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon
Much has been made of the team-first attitude Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield has taken to 200 victories, a milestone he reached September 13, 2011. At the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber, we know first-hand how much the veteran knuckleballer cares about others.
As a Jimmy Fund Co-Captain (along with fellow pitcher Clay Buccholz), for the past two seasons, Wakefield has been an ambassador for the Jimmy Fund -- raising awareness and building support for cancer care and research at Dana-Farber.
Beyond this "official" role, he has been revered by young Jimmy Fund Clinic patients and their families throughout his long Red Sox career.
He regularly invites clinic patients to Fenway to spend a day with him, and is always one of the players who spends the most time visiting with teenagers when they travel to spring training and Red Sox road games for a brief respite from their cancer treatment.
And when the Sox finally broke through in 2004 with their first world championship in 86 years, it was Wakefield who brought the World Series trophy to Dana-Farber for patients and staff of all ages to enjoy.
From all of us at the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber, congratulations on your wonderful achievement -- and thanks for the many ways you help us strike out cancer.
