Lights! Camera! Action! Join in the fight against cancer and give to the Jimmy Fund/Variety Children's Charity Theatre Collections Program, which will be coming June 1 to movie theatres in six states in the Northeast.

The Theatre Collections Program, the Jimmy Fund's oldest annual fundraising effort, first hit the big screens in 1949 to support lifesaving cancer research and care at New England's top cancer center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This year, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from June 1 to July 22, at participating theatres throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Vermont, a short film will be shown highlighting the work being done at Dana-Farber. Volunteers will then pass canisters through the audience in an effort to raise more than $600,000 for the Jimmy Fund.

In its early years, the Theatre Program attracted the support of such stars as Jimmy Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball's Ted Williams. Today the Theatre Collections Program relies on the help and support of the community and volunteers.

"While many are aware of the support of Hollywood personalities, the day-to-day efforts of caring community volunteers behind the scenes is imperative in the fight against cancer," says Mike Andrews, chairman of the Jimmy Fund and former Red Sox second baseman.

Help keep this 58-year tradition alive. Volunteer at your local theatre or give generously when the Jimmy Fund canister comes your way.
