Brookline restaurants bake special desserts to battle breast cancer

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer, a Boston culinary and fundraising tradition, is reaching out to Brookline restaurants. The event benefits the Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund, which has been raising "dough" since 2000 for breast cancer research, education and treatment for the Women's Cancers Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
From Monday, May 7, through Mother's Day on Sunday, May 13, pastry chefs from more than 100 restaurants in and around Boston will bake a unique dessert to put on their menu with 100 percent of sales benefiting the Eva Brownman Breast Cancer Fund.
Several Brookline restaurants are already on board, including Dalias Bistro & Wine Bar, Finale, Fireplace, Golden Temple and La Morra.
Finale's pastry chef, Nicole Coady, is involved with Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer for a very personal reason. Both her mother and paternal grandmother are breast cancer survivors. "It's a great opportunity for me to give back to not only cancer survivors, but to all family members that are survivors or part of the support system," says Coady.
She created Apricot Cinnamon Paradise for the event, because it reminds her of family. The dessert is a cinnamon cake with small French apricots, Tahitian vanilla chiboust crème and chestnut puree, served with apricot sorbet. "There is a chestnut tree at my grandmother's house and my mother likes the tartness of apricots," says Coady, "I had never had the flavors together, but thought they sounded like an interesting combination." The dessert will be sold for $9.95.
Finale is located at 1306 Beacon Street in Coolidge Corner, and can be reached at 617-232-3233 or at www.finaledesserts.com. For a full list of participating restaurants, visit www.bostonbakesforbreastcancer.org.
Since its inception Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer has raised more than $190,000, and this year, with new and delicious desserts being offered like Coady's Apricot Cinnamon Paradise, organizers hope to reach $225,000.
