Registration Open for 2006 Jimmy Fund Regatta, June 3 – 4
Sail for Jimmy, June 3, and Party in the Paint Shed, June 3
NEWPORT, R.I.─ Registration is now open for the 2006 Jimmy Fund Regatta presented by Northern Trust to be held June 3-4. It is a celebration that can't be missed with racing, a recreational sail, fundraising, and social events, including a Saturday night bash in the Newport Shipyard paint shed, called "Party in the Paint Shed."
The Jimmy Fund Regatta kicks off the 2006 Newport keelboat-racing season. Race and social headquarters will be located at Newport Shipyard with race management provided by Sail Newport. Boats in IRC, PHRF and One-Design classes, including Swan 45, Farr 40, Mumm 30, J105, J109, and Melges 24 are welcome. Other One-Design classes wishing to participate may contact kim.cooper@sailnewport.org.
Entry fees for the multi-day regatta vary with boat length. Regatta registration includes the entry into the Sail for Jimmy and some social event tickets. Multi-day regatta participants can purchase additional party tickets for a discounted price. Farr 40 and Mumm 30 classes will start racing on Friday, June 2. All other boats will embark on Saturday, June 3.
The Sail for Jimmy leg of the regatta on Saturday afternoon encourages racers and boaters of all abilities to join together to tackle cancer. The 18-mile course around Conanicut Island is open to all power boats and to sail boats more than 23 feet. The Sail for Jimmy entry fee for boaters not participating in the multi-day regatta is $75 for boats under 50 feet and $125 if the boat is bigger.
Newport Shipyard owner and event host Charlie Dana, who is also a Dana-Farber trustee, says, "The Jimmy Fund Regatta is world-class. The yachts and crews will be extraordinary, plus we'll raise awareness about advancing cancer research."
Tickets for Saturday night's Party in the Paint Shed, which will be held at Newport Shipyard on June 3 at 8 p.m., are also on sale online for $75 each. This party is open to everyone and will be one of the hottest events in Newport featuring a casual dinner, dancing and live music by Cracked Ice, a group of musicians who regularly perform on national television, on gold and platinum albums, and in sold-out concerts around the nation.
With more than 100 boats expected to race, and many more people attending regatta social events, organizers hope to raise more than $200,000 to benefit cancer care and research at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. "The Jimmy Fund is all about hope," Dana says, "Sailing in the Regatta is a beautiful way to be optimistic." And he adds, "You don't have to be a sailor to help out. The Party in the Paint Shed is going to be over the top. The dance floor and music will rock the shed to its very foundation."
