Joe Cronin Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Tournament - reeling in $325,000 for cancer care and research
Osterville, Mass. - It was a beautiful day for the 13th annual Joe Cronin Memorial Jimmy Fund Fishing Tournament off the waters of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket on August 11. More than 250 anglers reeled in $325,000 to fight cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, helping to raise the chances of survival for those facing cancer here and around the world.
Awards were given out in several categories, including heaviest blue fish and striped bass, most unusual catch, and best sportsmanship.
The tournament honors the life of Red Sox great and former American League president, Joe Cronin. Cronin, who was both a player and a manager for the Red Sox, was an active supporter of the Jimmy Fund since it was first created in 1948. He was a resident of Osterville until his death in 1984.
Former Red Sox player Mark Fidrych, along with NHL referee and Bruins analyst Paul Stewart, and former Bruins player Don Sweeney, all came out to support the tournament and the Jimmy Fund.
Tournament's headquarters were at Nauticus Marina in Osterville, Mass. Due to its success, the all-volunteer organizers are looking forward to their 14th year next summer.
