Central Middle School is a Scooper School
Students and staff raise money for the Jimmy Fund to honor former classmate Patrick White
The 24th annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl® is getting a head start with fundraising this year thanks to several Scooper Schools. Central Middle School in Quincy is the latest school to join the fight against cancer. Students and staff will be dishing out ice cream to honor former classmate Patrick White who recently lost his battle to cancer at the age of 15.
Scooper Schools is a new Jimmy Fund program that encourages schools, youth groups, and other student organizations to plan and run an ice cream fundraiser to benefit cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
On Friday, May 26, Central Middle School will open up its own small ice cream parlor at school. Stop & Shop in Quincy donated all of the ice cream. The Jimmy Fund gave the school ice cream cups and banners. For just $1 a scoop students and staff will help lick cancer.
It will be an opportunity for the 6th – 8th graders to understand the significance of philanthropy and build self-confidence, while remembering one of their own. Patrick White was an avid Red Sox fan and a great Little League player. At just 9 years old White began his treatment at Dana-Farber for rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of tissue cancer.
A special Jimmy Fund Scooper Schools Plaque will be given to the top fundraising organization. Plus, schools that raise more than $1000 will earn free admission to the Scooper Bowl® at City Hall Plaza in Boston for 120 students. The Scooper Bowl is on June 6, 7, and 8. Students that raise $500 or more will earn free admission for 70 children, and $200 or more earns free admission for 30 students.
The Scooper Bowl® is an all-you-can-eat ice cream festival serving more than 10 tons of ice cream from the nation's top ice cream makers. To get more information on Scooper Schools and to sign up, contact Sarah Neukom at (617) 632-5008 or sarah_neukom@dfci.harvard.edu.
