Brewster Boy Is Face of Jimmy Fund Fundraising Campaign
When Brewster's David Perez, 3, smiles, people can't help but smile back. "He has such an infectious smile, passers-by are always saying hello and wishing him well," says his mother, Maritza Perez. "If he wasn't bald, you wouldn't know he was sick."
In March, David was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukemia. He now receives treatment at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute once a week. About 4,000 new cases of ALL are diagnosed each year in the United States.
David, along with fellow Jimmy Fund Clinic patient Samantha Adams, was chosen as one of this year's Patient Partners for the Jiffy Lube®/Taco Bell® Value Card fundraiser campaign to benefit the Jimmy Fund. His picture can now be seen on posters and counter mats at more than 194 Jiffy Lube service centers and Taco Bell restaurants across New England.
"We are very excited and proud to have David be a spokesperson for this program," says his mother. "He's a very active little boy and he's so strong, so he's doing well with all the treatment."
David is the youngest of three children. He is very close to his older brother, Evon, 12, who was devastated to find out his youngest sibling had cancer. "Evon and David's sister Liliana come in to the Jimmy Fund Clinic with us once a week and try to learn everything about what's happening with their brother," says Maritza Perez.
From Oct. 13 – Dec. 15, customers contributing $2 to the Jimmy Fund at participating Jiffy Lube Service Centers and Taco Bell restaurants will be thanked with a Value Card worth more than $50 in future savings, including $5 discounts on their next four Jiffy Lube Signature Service® oil changes and $1 off their combo meal purchases at Taco Bell.
David and Samantha allow both Jiffy Lube and Taco Bell customers and staff to see the very real people who benefit from this campaign. In addition to a special Fenway Park kick-off with Jiffy Lube and Taco Bell franchisees and employees, David and Samantha will be the featured guests at the Dorchester, Mass., Jiffy Lube "Lube-A-Thon" on October 13. At the event, $10 from each vehicle receiving a Jiffy Lube Signature Service oil change will also be donated to the Jimmy Fund.
Now in its eighth year, the Value Card campaign has helped Jiffy Lube and Taco Bell raise more than $1.6 million for cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.
