Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk sets a
record pace in fundraising
BOSTON — The more than 8,000 walkers who participated in the 2001 Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk helped break the $4 million mark in fundraising.
"It's amazing that we were able to reach this amount considering what our nation faced in September," says Emily Swymer, Walk director. "The 'Walk' family pulled together and proved how dedication to a cause can make people achieve great things."
This new record-breaking amount was raised by participants who hail from all of the New England states and from states as far away as Utah, Wisconsin, Arizona, and California to support cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Many of the walkers are families and cancer survivors and patients.
Since the Walk's inception, 13 years ago, more than $22 million has been raised for the Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund's donors enable Dana-Farber's physicians and researchers to do the work necessary to raise the chances of survival for cancer patients around the world.
This year, the 14th annual Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk, presented by MFS Investment Management®, is slated for September 29. More than 9,000 people are expected to take to the streets between Hopkinton and Boston, walking up to 26 miles to raise money for cancer cures.
Walkers may choose to walk the entire route from Hopkinton to Boston, the 13.1-miles from Wellesley, or the 3-mile Patient/Family Walk, which starts on the Harvard Medical School quad in Boston.
Registration for the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk opens May 1, 2002. To register, call (617) 632-3562 for more information.
